What is Toastmasters

What is Toastmasters?

Toastmasters International is a non-profit educational organization that teaches public speaking and leadership skills through a worldwide network of clubs. Headquartered in Englewood, Colorado, the organization's membership exceeds 280,000 in more than 14,700 clubs in 144 countries. Since 1924, Toastmasters International has helped people from diverse backgrounds become more confident speakers, communicators, and leaders.

How Does Toastmasters Work?

Everything in Toastmasters revolves around the club. In District 56, we like to refer to meetings as Toastmaster pie as meetings are typically divided into 3 parts:

  • Prepared Speeches – timed speeches selected from projects in the Pathways online educational program that is included with your membership;
  • Impromptu Speeches – are intended to help members develop their ability to organize their 1-2 minute responses to random questions or topics (also referred to as Table Topics); and
  • Evaluation Segment – members will deliver an engaging and constructive 2-3 minute feedback of another member’s speech.

Most clubs have around 20 members and meet once a week for an hour. For a preview of what the club experience is like, please watch the video below:

Each club features their own unique experience, energy, and culture. There is no pressure to join the first club you visit. Attending club meetings as a guest is free. Visit as many times as you like until you find a club that fits your personality.
