DESCRIPCIÓN DEL CURSO: This course is an introduction into Cultural Awareness.

QUÉ APRENDERÁN LOS ASISTENTES:  In today’s globalized world, learning to communicate with people from different backgrounds is essential. Even when speaking the same language, depending on the regional backgrounds of the speakers, communication can be a challenge. This course is an introduction into Cultural Awareness.  You will experience what it is like for someone speaking their non-native language, the values associated with common sayings, and discuss whether burping at the end of a meal is polite.

NIVEL: For all.

Objetivo de aprendizaje 1:  To assist one-language speakers to appreciate the effort second language speakers exert while communicating in their non-native language.
Objetivo de aprendizaje 2: Identify the cross-cultural implications of using and hearing “common” sayings or proverbs.
Objetivo de aprendizaje 3: Understand the possible cross-cultural impact of “polite” behavior.

ABOUT Roxanne Warthen, ACG, ALB:  Roxanne is an experienced Toastmaster, being involved with different clubs since 2007. In her tenure with Toastmasters she has completed Advanced Communicator Gold & Advanced Leader Bronze. Currently she is a member of NOV InNOVators, the President of Heights Toastmasters, is the Area Director for O11, and is on the District 56 Training Team. She initially joined Toastmasters to practice slowing down her speech. Over the years Toastmasters has evolved with her to challenge her in different skills. She holds a bachelor’s degree in International Business with a minor in Spanish, & a master’s degree in Management.
